Family Safety Day 2015

It's a kid's dream come true.  With bucket truck and zip line rides, face painting, police dog demonstrations, and a host of other fun and free activities, Family Safety Day, presented by the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, and sponsored by Kosciusko REMC and Lutheran Health Network / KCH, has become a well-loved local favorite for kids and grown-ups of all ages.  Family Safety Day was held on Saturday, September 12th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Warsaw's Central Park and Center Lake Pavilion. Plan to attend Family Safety Day 2016 on Saturday, September 10th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Central Park and Center Lake Pavilion!  Past participants as well as new participants will be on hand!

Over 4,000 people attended the 2015 event dedicated to family health and safety.  A variety of hands-on learning activities, presentations and games, were offered free of charge to participants.  Kids learned about bike safety, farm safety, fire safety, street safety, stranger danger, electrical safety, water safety, first aid and many other areas of safety at this year's event.  There was also a special tent geared towards adults, "Prevention Costs a Little...Saves A Lot" sponsored by Protechs/1-800-Board Up that featured displays on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and electrical safety. 

Other activities that took place were:  Safe Assured ID kits for children, containing digital photo ID cards and a mini-CD encrypted with personal data, provided by the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist's Club; bucket truck rides provided by Kosciusko REMC; zip line rides provided by the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory; boat rides provided by the Warsaw DIVE team; and a bike rodeo provided by the Warsaw Police Department.  New this year, and a huge hit, the City of Warsaw Street Department instructed children on snow plow safety, crosswalk safety and provided street sign demonstrations as well as let the children hand paint the snow plows! 

Also the following took place:  water rescue demonstrations by the Warsaw DIVE team; K-9 demonstrations by the Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department; emergency vehicle display including fire trucks, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, Samaritan and Lutheran helicopters, make-n-take first aid kits from Lutheran Health Network KCH, grain entrapment simulation and a KREMC bucket truck and hands-on building activity.  Sparky the Fire Dog and Daren the DARE Lion met and greeted guests.  Face painting and balloon art was also provided free of charge to children. This year Sweetcakes Entertainment will wow the kids with their balloon art.

Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography motor coach joined us again in 2015 and will be in attendance in 2016.  The coach brings high-quality, life-saving mammography screening to women across northeast Indiana at locations more convenient to their homes or workplaces.  The program is a partnership of the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Breast Diagnostic Center and Francine’s Friends.  Further information and to register can be found at

The Parkview Warsaw YMCA provided free A1C testing.  This testing detects pre-diabetes.  Through the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, class participants are given the skills and support needed to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes.  The year-long program is designed to help participants trade old habits for healthier new ones, increase physical activity and lose a modest amount of weight. 

ICU of North Central Indiana's Image Clear Ultrasound unit was on hand providing clients with free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds.  They serve without regard to age, race, income, nationality, religious affiliation, disability or other arbitrary circumstances.  They will give accurate information about pregnancy, fetal development, lifestyle issues, and related concerns.  This service and information is given in strict and absolute confidence.  Call or text 574-635-1272 or email to schedule an appointment.  They can be followed on their website:; Instagram ICU_NCI or Twitter @ICUMobileNCI. 

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile was in attendance in 2015 and will be in attendance in 2016 as well.  Donors interested in giving blood can register online at or call 1-800-redcross.  Support the community by donating blood! 

A variety of health and safety organizations had booths inside Center Lake Pavilion and provided health and safety information and materials.
