Family Safety Day

It's a kid's dream come true.  With bucket truck and zip line rides, face painting, police dog demonstrations, and a host of other fun and free activities, Family Safety Day, presented by the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, and sponsored by Kosciusko REMC and Lutheran Health Network / KCH, has become a well-loved local favorite for kids and grown-ups of all ages.

A variety of hands-on learning activities, presentations and games, are offered free of charge to participants.  Kids learn about bike safety, farm safety, fire safety, street safety, stranger danger, electrical safety, water safety, first aid and many other areas of health and safety.  There is also a tent geared towards adults, "Prevention Costs a Little...Saves A Lot" sponsored by Protechs/1-800-Board Up that features displays on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and electrical safety.  Other activities include:  Safe Assured ID kits for children, containing digital photo ID cards and a mini-CD encrypted with personal data, provided by the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist's Club; bucket truck rides provided by Kosciusko REMC; zip line rides provided by the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory; boat rides provided by the Warsaw DIVE team; and a bike rodeo provided by the Warsaw Police Department.  Also, the City of Warsaw Street Department instructs children on snow plow safety, crosswalk safety and provides street sign demonstrations as well as lets the children hand paint the snow plows!

Water rescue demonstrations by the Warsaw DIVE team; K-9 demonstrations by the Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department; emergency vehicle display including fire trucks, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, Samaritan and Lutheran helicopters, make-n-take first aid kits from Lutheran Health Network KCH and KREMC bucket trucks and hands-on building activity are also a part of the event.  Sparky the Fire Dog and Daren the DARE Lion meet and greet guests.  Face painting and balloon art is also provided free of charge to children.

Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography motor coach has been a part of FSD for the past few years.  The coach brings high-quality, life-saving mammography screening to women across northeast Indiana at locations more convenient to their homes or workplaces.  The program is a partnership of the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Breast Diagnostic Center and Francine’s Friends.  Further information and to register can be found at http://www.francinesfriends.org/

The Parkview Warsaw YMCA provides free A1C testing.  This testing detects pre-diabetes.  Through the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, class participants are given the skills and support needed to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes.  The year-long program is designed to help participants trade old habits for healthier new ones, increase physical activity and lose a modest amount of weight.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile has also been a part of FSD for the past few years.  Donors interested in giving blood can register online at
http://www.redcrossblood.org/ or call 1-800-redcross.  Support the community by donating blood!

A variety of health and safety organizations have booths inside Center Lake Pavilion and provide health and safety information and materials.
